嶋本昭三の芸術と革新
Yoshiaki Inoue Galleryは、アート・バーゼル香港にて、戦後日本を代表する前衛作家・嶋本昭三（1928–2013）の作品を紹介いたします。
嶋本昭三は、大阪市に生まれ、関西学院大学在学中に具体美術協会の創設者・吉原治良氏に師事。氏のもとでその革新的な創作姿勢が高く評価されました。制作初期には経済的制約から新聞紙を支持体とした作品を手がけており、その過程で偶然生まれた「穴」に着目。これを新たな表現として昇華させ、「穴の作品」として発表しました。この作品群は、絵画というメディアが二次元から三次元へと拡張しうる可能性を示すものであり、1954年の具体美術協会発足時には創立会員として参加しました。
なかでも代表作の一つである「瓶なげ絵画」では、従来の筆を使う手法から、大砲の筒や瓶に絵具を入れてキャンバスへ投げつけるという、極めて独創的な手法を採用。創作のプロセスそのもの、また偶発性をも芸術として取り込む姿勢は、従来の絵画観に大きな変革をもたらしました。
嶋本は具体美術協会解散後も、「誰もやったことのないことをやれ」という吉原氏の理念を体現すべく、メール・アート、女拓（にょたく）、ヘッド・アートなど、前例のない新たな表現手法を次々に展開。芸術の可能性を拡張し続けました。
さらに嶋本は、芸術を通じて社会課題にも積極的にアプローチしました。人種差別や性差別、環境問題、障害者支援といったテーマに対し、深い共感と優しさをもって取り組み、芸術の新たな可能性を探求し続けました。

Shozo Shimamoto — Art and Innovation
Yoshiaki Inoue Gallery is pleased to present works by one of postwar Japan’s leading avant-garde artists, Shozo Shimamoto (1928–2013), at Art Basel Hong Kong.
Born in Osaka, Shimamoto studied under Jiro Yoshihara, the founder of the Gutai Art Association, while attending Kansei Gakuin University. Under Yoshihara’s guidance, his innovative approach to artistic creation was highly acclaimed. In the early stages of his career, due to financial constraints, Shimamoto created works using newspaper as his primary medium. It was during this time that he discovered the expressive potential of accidental “holes” in the material—an element he elevated into a new form of artistic expression, presenting them as his signature “Hole Works.” These works demonstrated the possibility of expanding painting from a two-dimensional medium into the realm of three dimensions. Shimamoto became a founding member of the Gutai Art Association upon its establishment in 1954.
Among his most iconic works is the Bottle Crash Painting series, in which he moved away from traditional brush techniques and instead adopted a radically original method: filling bottles or cannon-like tubes with paint and throwing them onto the canvas. This approach embraced both the creative process and the element of chance as essential components of art, marking a dramatic shift in the conventional understanding of painting.
True to Yoshihara’s dictum—“Do what no one has done before”—Shimamoto continued to pioneer groundbreaking modes of expression, including mail art, Nyotaku (body printing using female models), and head art, among others. Through these experimental practices, he consistently pushed the boundaries of artistic possibility.
Shimamoto also actively engaged with pressing social issues through his art. With deep empathy and compassion, he addressed themes such as racial and gender discrimination, environmental concerns, and support for people with disabilities, continually seeking new ways for art to contribute to society.
