Hiroto Kitagawa

Hiroto Kitagawa (1967- ), an artist who produces figures of modern young people and people of the near-future, is inspiring–sans borders–both sculpture and ceramics through a unique world-view and formative approach of a novel method in which, utilizing terracotta (low-temperature fired clay), he vividly colors the surface with acrylic paint after firing it. Kitagawa has been drawn to ceramics ever since university at the Sculpture Department and almost consistently devoted himself to figurative expression. Struck by Giuliano Vangi’s works, he went to study figurative sculpture in Italy, where he encountered a classical sculpture technique called terracotta. However, in pursuit of a sense of the time he is living in, he in a sense, re-painted terracotta into a modern expression by adding coloring, which was considered taboo, in order to give reality to the form. Kitagawa became widely known in Japan from his “New Type” series featuring life-sized anime-character-like figures with slim, long-limbed frames. His interest in young people who will carry the future is a reflection of his own hopes and worries about the future. Before long, his expression began to be filled with, darkness, gloom, despair, and anger towards a disturbing society and evolved into figures that reflect Kitagawa’s look at his own society and unique world-view. Over the past few years, Kitagawa has been pursuing depth in hues and textures and taking on high-temperature firing. This, however, is not a pursuit of ceramic-ware-like qualities but one to continue his persistent devotion to “creating shapes with his own original order” and “objects that express ‘now.’”
