Form and Presence
This exhibition brings together five artists from distinct Asian contexts to explore the themes of “presence” and “form” through diverse visual languages. Gregory Halili paints intimate portraits on delicate shell surfaces, evoking the fragility of life and nature. Ryan Villamael transforms maps into intricate paper cut sculptures, examining memory, territory, and colonial histories. Etsuko Nakatsuji has spent over six decades pursuing the “human form,” balancing abstraction and figuration to explore the essence of humanity. Hiroko Inoue presents portraits of refugee women in her series Being in the face—the result of long-term engagement and mutual trust between artist and subject. Her works reflect a quiet insistence on the dignity of existence. Toshio Shibata’s large-format photographs depict man-made structures embedded in natural landscapes, revealing both the aesthetic harmony and the inherent contradictions of modern Japan. Together, these works prompt viewers to reflect on how we perceive, recognize, and coexist with both others and ourselves within contemporary society.
