Robert Kushner (b. 1949) is one of the leading figures of Pattern and Decoration (P&D), an art movement that emerged in New York in the 1970s.
“Decoration” is one of the key elements in understanding Kushner’s art. At a time when Minimalism and Conceptual Art exerted a powerful influence on American art in the 1970s, P&D artists actively embraced pattern, color, textiles, craft, and ornament in their work.
Kushner’s work also reflects the influence of European Modernism, particularly Henri Matisse, in its distinctive use of color and sensitivity to line, as well as a deep engagement with Japanese art. Among the Japanese artists he has long admired is Ito Jakuchu.
Ode to Jakuchu is a series created as an homage to Jakuchu. Through free-flowing lines and vibrant colors that capture the vitality of flowers, the works bring together Kushner’s admiration for Jakuchu and his own decades-long exploration of floral painting.
East and West, tradition and the contemporary—through this rich dialogue, Kushner creates a distinctive world of flowers that is entirely his own.
