《吉原治良》
1905年、大阪の油問屋に生まれる。独学で油絵を学び、初期は具象から出発するが、1929年の初個展直後に藤田嗣治と出会い、芸術におけるオリジナリティの重要性を強く認識。以降、前衛的な抽象表現へと転換し、日本における抽象美術の先駆的存在として活動を展開する。
1954年、関西を拠点とする16名の芸術家とともに具体美術協会（Gutai Art Association）を結成し、49歳でその代表に就任。白髪一雄、嶋本昭三、元永定正、田中敦子らを擁し、「これまでにないものを創れ」「抽象であれ」という理念のもと、強いリーダーシップを発揮した。
具体美術は、物質と精神の直接的な関係を重視し、従来の絵画の枠を超えて、身体性・行為・時間性を取り込んだ革新的な表現を展開。1957年にフランスの美術評論家ミシェル・タピエと出会ったことを契機に、“GUTAI”はヨーロッパを中心に国際的な注目を集める。
吉原自身も画家として、円をモチーフとした抽象絵画をはじめとする作品群により、日本の戦後抽象美術を代表する存在として評価されている。具体美術協会は20世紀後半を代表する前衛運動のひとつとして、今日の国際美術史において重要な位置を占めている。
《Jiro Yoshihara》
Jiro Yoshihara was born in 1905 in Osaka, Japan, into a family that ran an oil wholesale business. He began painting independently, initially working in representational styles. A pivotal moment came in 1929, shortly after his first solo exhibition, when he encountered Tsuguharu Foujita, which led him to recognize the importance of originality in artistic practice. From this point onward, he turned toward avant-garde abstraction and became a leading figure in modern Japanese abstract art.
In 1954, Yoshihara founded the Gutai Art Association with sixteen artists based in the Kansai region and assumed the role of its leader at the age of 49. Members included Kazuo Shiraga, Shozo Shimamoto, Sadamasa Motonaga, and Atsuko Tanaka. As a strong and uncompromising leader, Yoshihara insisted on two core principles: “Create what has never been done before” and “Be abstract.” Under his direction, the group explored radical approaches to artistic expression, incorporating unconventional materials and techniques, as well as concepts such as action, physicality, and temporality.
A major turning point came in 1957 with Yoshihara’s encounter with the French art critic Michel Tapié, which brought “GUTAI” to international attention, particularly in Europe. Today, Gutai is recognized as one of the most significant avant-garde movements of the second half of the 20th century.
As a painter, Yoshihara is also known for his iconic circle motifs and remains a central figure in postwar Japanese abstraction.
