Akihito Takuma

The title Lines of Flight is a concept put forward by philosopher Gilles Deleuze, who is a strong influence on Takuma. Analyzing philosophical terms is quite beyond the author’s ability, but “flight” in this case does not have a negative nuance, rather it is a positive action such as “escape” or “departure.” And “lines” also overlaps with the meaning of a “circuit.” The innumerable lines that are created instantaneously with the stroke of the brush represent the introduction of noise into a managed, rigid system as well as the circuitry that connects to the recovery of humanity.
In order to create these unique brush marks, has handcrafted a special tool that connects a flat brush more than 2 meters across. The process of running the brush across the canvas is a one-shot deal that has to be finished before the oil paint dries, so once started it cannot be interrupted. Trial and error is impossible in principle, and it has to be finished in a single, explosive stroke, but it is impossible even for the artist to predict what the result will be until it’s done. It is an activity that is just like “lines of flight” in the way that it includes a large element of chance, excludes pre-established harmony, and Takuma creates a situation that he himself cannot control.
